The Child Medical Expense Subsidy Program provides financial assistance for medical expenses incurred when a child is injured or falls ill. It covers out-of-pocket payments made at medical institutions for treatments and prescribed medications under health insurance.
Only medical treatments covered by health insurance (保険診療, insured medical services) are eligible.
Eligibility
Applicants must meet all of the following conditions:
・Must be enrolled in health insurance (健康保険, public health insurance).
・Must be under the age of 15 (until March 31 following their 15th birthday).
(Eligibility may vary depending on the municipality.)
There are no income-based restrictions for eligibility.
Subsidy Details
Both inpatient and outpatient medical expenses are covered.
・Only medical expenses covered by health insurance (保険適用, insurance-covered treatments) are eligible.
・Non-covered expenses, such as treatments not covered by insurance, health checkups, vaccinations, medical certificates (診断書, medical documentation), hospital room charges, and meal costs during hospitalization, are not included.
Application Process
Submit the application form along with the required documents to your local municipality. Once approved, a Welfare Medical Expense Recipient Certificate (福祉医療費受給者証) will be mailed to your registered address.
