Everything You Need to Know About Health Insurance Card

Social Security

A health insurance card, often used for medical expense procedures at hospitals and as an official ID.

In this article, I’ll cover the basic rules about the health insurance card.

What is a Health Insurance Card?

The health insurance card proves you’re insured under social insurance. Typically, you’ll get it from your HR department a few weeks after joining a company. The card varies depending on your health insurance plan.

When and Where to Use It

Show your health insurance card at the reception when you visit a medical institution for illness or injury. You can use it at any designated medical institution nationwide, except for work-related injuries or illnesses.

What Happens When You Show Your Insurance Card

When you present your health insurance card at a medical institution, you only pay a portion of the total medical cost (like 30%). The rest (like 70%) is billed to the insurer that issued your card.

If You Forget Your Insurance Card

If you forget your health insurance card when visiting a hospital, you’ll need to pay the full cost upfront. You can get reimbursed for the portion covered by insurance (like 70%) later by following the proper procedures.

When You Leave Your Job

Your health insurance card becomes invalid the day after you leave your job. Return the card to HR promptly and start using the insurance card from your new insurance plan.
